Computing
In a digital society where we interact with a range of devices and interfaces, we recognise the importance of ensuring our pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to become responsible digital citizens. Through our computing curriculum, we ensure that children are taught regularly about how to stay safe online. Online Safety is taught through computing sessions, PSHE sessions, assemblies and also extra discussions based on recent events.
Through weekly computing lessons, children have opportunities to learn about programming, blogging, animation, publishing and developing digital media. Pupils have access to our school computing suite, iPads, Chromebooks and laptops. Children are also given access to a wide range of software and hardware to develop their programming skills, including Scratch, Python and Micro:Bit.
Our Online Safety web page contains videos and links for parents to view if they would like more information about this.
Our Computing Learning Journey
Our computing learning journey works alongside the National Curriculum as well as taking into consideration the children's previous learning in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, and their future learning in Key Stage 3. This allows the children to build on their prior knowledge and skills whilst also preparing them for their computing lessons in secondary school. Pupils encounter a range of different software during their time at Burlington Junior School and continue their learning about online safety and being a responsible digital user.
Enrichment in Computing
Throughout their time at Burlington Junior School, children have the opportunity to work with a wide range of software from Scratch to Python, Google Sites to Micro:bit. Pupils are able to make purposeful, cross-curricular links to both science and design and technology where they can utilise and deepen their understanding of key knowledge and skills. In Year 4, for example, pupils apply their knowledge of Micro:bit coding to their burglar alarm designs in design and technology lessons.
Pupils have the opportunity to attend 'Coding Club' as an extra-curricular activity throughout the school year, developing their knowledge and skills in computer programming.
