French
French is taught with a practical and creative approach at Burlington Junior School through the five pillars of phonology, grammar, vocabulary, culture, and songs, stories and rhymes. We encourage the children to develop a passion and enthusiasm for languages through song, role-play and games.
By regularly revising and reviewing prior learning, we ensure that pupils gain a solid foundation of language skills for them to build on each year. Our pupils develop their intercultural understanding by applying their learning to ‘real-life’ scenarios and contexts.
"My favourite thing about French lessons is being able to practise in real life and there is a good level of challenge."
Year 5 Pupil
"Learning a different language is hard but fun. We love the acting activities."

Our French Learning Journey
Our French learning journey works alongside the National Curriculum as well as taking into consideration the children's previous learning in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, and their future learning in Key Stage 3. This allows the children to build on their prior knowledge and skills whilst also preparing them for language lessons in secondary school.
"I love the interactive slides, singing songs in French and recapping what we have learned every week as it helps me to remember."

Enrichment in French and Modern Foreign Languages
Pupils have opportunities to participate in language competitions and events throughout the academic year including the Kingston and Merton Modern Foreign Languages Competition, International Francophonie Day and the European Day of Languages.
There are also additional practice tasks that pupils can complete in French, including our 'French takeaway' worksheets to develop vocabulary. Pupils also have access to the Language Angels Home School which pupils can log in to at home to further develop their skills in French.
"I love learning how to say different words in French and using the songs and games on Language Angels."
